There was a time when I thought picnics only happened in films. Someone arrives carrying a beautiful woven basket, a checked blanket appears as if by magic, and suddenly everyone is eating strawberries and laughing in perfect sunshine.
My reality was usually sitting on a damp patch of grass with a soggy sandwich and an itchy bum.
Then one summer, almost by accident, I bought a proper picnic blanket.
Not an expensive one. Just a waterproof-backed blanket that folded neatly and fit in the boot of the car.
I had no idea that one purchase would turn me into the sort of person who carries a picnic blanket everywhere.
The Unexpected Joy of Being Prepared
It turns out that a picnic blanket is useful for far more than picnics.
I’ve used mine for:
Watching outdoor concerts
Sitting by the river
Family sports days
Beach sunsets
Garden parties
Last-minute fish and chip dinners by the sea
Waiting for fireworks
Watching the kids play while pretending to read a book
And every single time, I feel oddly smug.
The picnic blanket also got me thinking that perhaps keeping a small “summer emergency kit” in the car isn’t such a bad idea. After all, sunshine in the UK is notoriously unpredictable. One minute it’s raining; the next, everyone in Britain is racing to the nearest park with a picnic blanket, a brolly, and a carefully considered plan to achieve the perfect sun-to-shade ratio before the weather changes its mind again.

The secret is finding one that’s waterproof underneath and soft on top.

No more balancing your drink on uneven ground or sacrificing it to the lawn gods.

Because warm sandwiches and melted chocolate are not the summer memories anyone wants.

Nothing transforms a random patch of grass into an event quite like the right playlist.
5. A Good Straw Hat
At some point, sun protection becomes less about fashion and more about survival.
6. Portable Sunshade Umbrella
Providing optimism, shade, and a backup plan for when British weather inevitably changes its mind.
New Theory About Summer
I used to think summer happiness required expensive holidays and elaborate plans.
Now I think it mostly requires:
A picnic blanket
Something cold to drink
People you like
Somewhere reasonably scenic
A willingness to sit on the ground for a while and pretend this was the plan all along.
Everything else is a bonus.
And if you’ve got a wine glass holder stuck into the grass beside you?
Well, that’s not just a picnic.
That’s luxury.
